During the previous month before the start of hostilities, a part of the US Asiatic Fleethad been sent to the southern Philippines. By this time, however, the Japanese had successfully detached Manchuria from the rest of China, creating the puppet state of Manchukuo under the deposed Qing emperor Pu Yi.
